Lighthouse

Since it's semester break, I don't want to waste any single moment. I want to spend it to the fullest. What can I do? I've been thinking to work part time. The reason of it is to earn money, experience, and allow myself to spend my time do something rather than sit at home facebooking all day.

I don't want to work as a salesgirl in a shopping mall. I wanna work in an office so that I could get experience. I will be teaching tuition and a camp to attend. So I hope I could get a job that offers me flexible time according to my free time. I was thinking there will be no job for me as it's inconvenient for them.

So a friend of mine Jeff introduced me his job, which is working as an admin + sales in his office -- Lighthouse. With the name of the office, we know that it sells light. It's more like a showroom. I was wondering to go for it or not, but Jeff said that his boss can arrange the time according to my timetable. This is the part that interests me. So I went for the interview.

It was my first time ever to go for a job interview. I've been working on 3 different jobs but I've never been to a job interview. I've only been to club interviews. The first time I got interviewed is during my lower 6 for the Economy club. And the second time is in UPM joining an activity called PAP (Pesta Ang Pau).

Alright, moving on. I was nervous for the interview. I was wondering what to wear, how to answer the questions that the boss might be asking. I was thinking of all the situations. Thanks to the second interview that I attended. The seniors that interviewed me in UPM asked me questions like this :

Senior : So what makes you think that we should let you join our activity?
Senior : So from your 100% free time, how will you divide your time with this activity, your family, your studies, your relationship, entertainment? How many per cent you will give to this activity?
Senior : What are your weakness?
Senior : Will your weakness make this activity fail or couldn't be organised as planned?
Senior : If the costume for the performers was stolen or lost 1 hour before the shows start, what are you going to do?

These are the questions that the senior asked me. I was freaking out and didn't know how to answer for a few of the questions. That's the reason why I was nervous for this job interview. Even an interview for an activity in a university is so tough, what is a job interview like? I was thinking how to answer if the boss was about to ask some tough questions like the senior did.

However, everything didn't turn out like the way I thought it would be. The boss, his name is Ken. He is a very nice and friendly person. Although he made me waited for 40 minutes before the interview begin, plus I went there earlier 20 minutes than the appointment time, so I've waited for around 1 hour and 10 minutes, the interview went great. It was just a relaxing 15 minutes interview. He asked about what am I doing, where am I studying, the salary that I expect, what job that I expect, am I a Christian, and he even invited me to his church's Christmas party! What's this? Hahaa. Wow. Thanks to the crazy interview in UPM that freaks me out ~.~

Time flies, today is 15th, I've been working there for 13 days already. I realised that the technology is very advanced right now. Even a lamp needs a timer? Even a light has a remote control? There's a light that cost RM14000? There are so many things about lighting. People building man-made stars on their ceilings? I've seen some lighting pictures of a customer that this company made, this customer's house has a lift! And he decorated his house with such fancy lighting!

During the olden days, lights are used to brighten up our surrounding at night so that we could see when it's dark. The lightbulbs were invented by Thomas Edision on December 1879. Thanks to him, we are able to see and do our daily process at night. Things will be so inconvenient if there is no light.

But now, the technology is so modern that even there are fashion for lights. There are so many designs for lighting. There are so many choices for lighting according to our homes' concept. You can pick any type of lights that you want, modern, classic, crystals,so many more, any way that you want it, the supplier has it, as long as you have the money.

Come to think of it, there is some thing that is important,it's basic need for human, but it doesn't mean that we need the fancy thing of that thing. So here comes the differences between "Keperluan" (need) and "Kehendak" (want) that I used to study in Economics. Hahaha. Well, It's a fact that cannot be denied that light is important. We need lights very much. But now, even lighting can even become a fashion? Is it necessary?

My working days there are okay. My colleagues are fine. The admin work such as checking stock could make me headache a little bit sometimes but I'm okay with that. Making slide shows from catalogue is not a difficult job, it's just that it's time-taking a lot and I'm okay with that too. The part that I have stressed on is serving customers. Honestly, whenever I'm in the office alone, I pray that no customer come. Even there is customer, I hope that I can serve them well. There are some customers that love to ask a lot of questions and I don't know much about the light! I just afraid that I make them upset. Yes, I do want to learn more. I hope I can serve them well too. Oh well, but so far I've served 2 customers solo only. Normally there were colleagues around me. Phew~

So what have I learned so far during this 23 working days? First thing I learned is how to punch card! Sounds crazy I know. But I've never punched a card before this. Hahaaha. Well, I learned that there are a lot of different watts of energy saving bulbs. 24 watts,18 watts,15 watts,13 watts,8 watts.....And there's this code for the base, which is E27,and other types also such as GU10,MR16,E14....Sounds complicated eh? Yeah, and there warmwhite, coolwhite, or daylight for the brightness/colour of the bulbs. There are also energy saving bulbs,LED and halogens and so much more. Hahahaha.... Wow, I never know that there is so much to study about lighting. So now I know. Oh well, 10 more working days to go for me! All the best! :D
